Camp Firecracker - a traditional summer camp experience for youth with ADHD!

                   
                 

Like many programs offered by Camp Fire Alabama, Camp Firecracker was developed when a parent and teacher approached us seeking help for a group of youth with a special need: an affordable, traditional resident camp session uniquely designed for children with a primary diagnosis of ADHD. Camp Fire staff have worked closely with parents, school counselors, teachers, principals, and college professors to design a weeklong schedule of activities that will insure a measurable and meaningful experience for these unique campers and their parents.

The following information was designed to help you decide if Camp Firecracker is a good fit for your child.

Session Date: July 15th, 2018 – July 20th, 2018

                   
                 

Activities: Our campers stay busy! Activities include canoeing, hiking, swimming, fishing, sports & games, team building, arts & crafts, campouts, scavenger hunts, mindfulness activities and so much more! Our activities change daily; our goal is that each child will try something new at Camp Firecracker. 

                   
                 

Staff & Training: 

Counselors are carefully chosen for their leadership skills and interest in child development. They are trained by seasoned camp staff and attend workshop sessions with a specialist versed in the behavior of children with ADHD.  We maintain a 2:5 staff to camper ratio.  

Camp Firecracker counselors are: 

  • Carefully chosen and trained.

  • Meet standard program requirements of Camp Fire Alabama & the American Camping Association.

  • Required to have a criminal background check, multi-panel drug screen, and provide references.

  • Most are upper level college/graduate students majoring in childhood development or education.

  • Required to participate in a week long pre-camp training session, in addition to daily meetings.

  • Certified in First Aid & CPR; the well-being and safety of our campers is our first concern.

                   
                 

Who is Eligible?  Registration is open to campers who meet the following criteria:

  • Youth entering grades 7 - 9 AND who will be between the ages of 12-14 by May 31, 2018.

  • Youth with a primary diagnosis of ADHD

  • Youth living in the greater Birmingham area

                   
                 

Registration: To ensure quality and effectiveness, registration will be on a first come first served basis until session is full, with an option to be placed on a wait list.  Registration for Camp Firecracker takes place online. The form must be completed in one session; you will not be able to save and return to your registration at a later time. You will need the following information in order to complete the registration form:

  • Medical Insurance Information
  • Emergency Contact Information (MUST match I.D for verification)

    You will also be required to submit the following documents:

    *Written notice from your child’s doctor listing ADHD as his/her primary diagnosis

    *A copy of your child's most recent immunization record (blue form)

    *A copy of your child’s most recent report card with attendance information

    *A completed copy of the teacher feedback form (Please decide which teacher at your child's school needs to complete this form) You can download a blank copy HERE.

    You have until July 9th (roughly one week before the session begins) to submit the additional supporting documents by choosing one of the following:

    3: Drop off at the Camp Fletcher office in Bessemer.

                   
                 

Fees and Deposits: All registrations are subject to a $50 non-refundable registration fee (to hold your spot).  Thanks to a grant from the Joseph S. Bruno Charitable Foundation, the program is completely FREE! Registrations will not be processed until the registration form and fee have been received by the camp registrar. Please call the Camp office at (205) 428-1059 to make your payment.

                   
                 

ACA: Camp Fletcher's programs are accredited by the American Camping Association. This means we voluntarily invite an outside team of ACA trained visitors every 3 years to verify our compliance with more than 300 nationally recognized industry standards - from staff qualifications & training, to health & safety and site & facility management.
